Hello, I'm Marlene Garza, Psy.D. she/they

About Marlene Garza, Psy.D.'s Practice

As a Chicana (bilingual and bicultural), my aim is to privilege cultural contexts in as well as to promote more effective strategies for change and growth in individual psychotherapy treatment. I use a strength-based and holistic approach when helping people to develop emotional emancipation and liberation from harmful beliefs and behaviors that may be holding them back from healing.

My practice also provides psychological and neuropsychological services for residents of California, New York, and Nevada in both Spanish and English language. I also provide letter writing and support for gender affirming medical procedures and accept select insurance for this service.

Neuropsychology is a specialty of clinical psychology that helps individuals understand their current brain functioning. Neuropsychological evaluations consider and assess the relationship between brain and behavior as well as the emotional facet of neurological disorders while also considering cultural contexts. Results of a neuropsychological evaluation can help a person determine the best academic and work environments and provide recommendations for the person's everyday functioning.

In all contexts, I empower people to identify and maximize their personal strengths to help them develop positive coping mechanisms and new ways of living healthy and functional lives. Each person is unique and treatment is individualized using a multitude of techniques from traditional evidence-based practices, all within a Liberation Psychology framework.

Values and Approach

Using a culturally responsive, multi contextual and integrated approach to assessment, I help clients understand their cognitive functioning by helping to clarify the brain-behavior relationship. This also provides a comprehensive cognitive snapshot of an individual.
A neuropsychological evaluation involves a clinical interview, review of records, and testing. Referrals for a neuropsychological evaluation include assessment of the impact of a head injury on thinking, mood, and overall functioning.
