Hello, I'm Jennifer Young she/her/hers

Healing is ancient; therapy is new. I am committed to liberating ourselves from oppressive structures to give breath to our authentic selves.

About Jennifer Young's Practice

Congratulations on starting your search for a therapist! Finding the right therapist can take a lot of time and energy. I will try to help by sharing what I would want to know if I were starting therapy.

Most people will experience difficult times at some point in their life and there is no single solution that will work for everyone. As an integrative therapist, I seek to gain an accurate understanding of each individual by learning about their history and relationships and how they experience life in the present. In so doing, I strive to tailor therapy in a way that will resonate with you. I work from a trauma-informed lens and specialize in helping people move through their challenges and/or heal from traumatic event(s).

While you will see an Asian face when working with me, my life experiences have led me to identify as multicultural - a global citizen, if you will. I've had the pleasure and privilege of living, studying, or working in several different countries and these experiences have all impacted my identity and my worldview. In the U.S., people seem to understand me if I say that I identify as a 1.5 generation immigrant from Taiwan (Republic of China - it's complicated), and I am a cisgender, straight, Asian-American woman. In other places in the world, I would emphasize that I am American born in Taiwan with family lineage in China. If any of this speaks to you, great! Identity is complicated sometimes.

As a professional (and human), I strive to remain a student. I believe expertise is overrated and dangerous for continued learning. I strive to be an ally. I strive to be anti-racist. I strive to dismantle colonizing structures. I strive to live by the Golden and Platinum Rules. I strive to act with integrity, treat all people with dignity, and connect with people from everywhere.

Values and Approach

My training was based in humanistic-existential psychology and systems theory. Over the years, I have developed an interest for interpersonal neurobiology and attachment theory. I believe the combination of these elements has helped me view individuals as their own unique system (physical health, identities, perceptions of ourselves and the world) and experiences (thoughts, feelings, behaviors, sensations and memories). It also helps to understand the other systems with which the individual is interacting (e.g. workplace, school, country, political environment) and the people in them.
Having a multidimensional view of the people I work with gives us the opportunity to engage in the therapy process from a holistic perspective. For some, therapy will be short-term and goal-directed. For others, it will be longer-term and depth-oriented. I use a lens that is sensitive to how your cultural environment(s) may affect your life. I tailor my approach to what will be most effective for you given your current context(s). I enjoy working with adults in all phases of life. Much of my work has been centered around supporting Third-Culture Kids/Adults, Global Nomads, humanitarian aid workers, and expatriates.
